We have decided, here at James and Alex Dance Studios, that it is only fair our students get to know a little more about each of our lovely, talented staff members.

We have given each of them a short questionnaire, so that they can share with you guys their dance backgrounds, experience, advice and what inspires them. Oh, and they included photos too!

So, let’s not waste anymore time, let us introduce you to this week’s featured member of staff…

Emilie Malmqvist

Emilie has been teaching Hip Hop at James and Alex Dance Studios for around 6 months. She is from Falun, Sweden.

Emilie trained in all styles of dance, starting at her local dance school at the age of 7. She then went on to complete her training at the Asafolkhogskola University. There she specialized in the foundations of all street styles, hip hop, locking, b-boying, house and popping.

Emilie has performed and taught hip hop internationally, in countries such as Sweden, Palestine, Jordan and the UAE.

She is the creative director of her own company based in Sweden called Curved Beats. Her projects have included working towards women’s rights and development in the arts, working with refugee camps and local projects within the hip hop industry. She has performed at many shows and events and has taught in various street styles.

Emilie loves all styles of dance, but especially the styles that inspire and influence her work. For teaching, performing and choreography, she prefers hip hop and house style, but is still trained and experienced in all styles of dance.

I never knew what I wanted be when growing up. I have always thought, I want to be myself“, says Emilie. Her role model is her grandmother – ‘The strongest woman I know‘.

Emilie’s favourite part of teaching is sharing the love of dance with her students and seeing them change and grow as dancers. When asked if there was a particular quote that helped and kept her going through her training and career, she said ‘Dance is my revolution‘. Her advice to aspiring dancers would be:

“Never let yourself be labelled. Always believe in yourself and do what makes you strong and happy’.

Emilie’s open Hip Hop classes are every week as follows:

Tuesday: 8 – 9pm (Beginner / Improver)

Saturday: 8 – 9pm (Beginner / Improver) and 9 -10pm (Intermediate / Advanced)

Available for private classes on request.
